Disabling automatic data collection like IP cature, timezone, and metadata
For account owners only, you can stop Ethnio from the following three types of data. Keep in mind this is account-wide, and controls web intercepts, app intercepts, and study links.
📊 Metadata
This includes several types of data, and if you choose to disable this one, keep in mind Fraud Prevention will not work as well.
- IP address capture to detect duplicate or suspicious submissions and improve security.
- Location via GeolP which estimates participant location based on IP address, helping with regional targeting and compliance.
- Fingerprint which helps fraud prevention with a unique browser/device identifier that helps detect fraudulent or repeat responses.
- Browser user agent string that captures browser and operating system details to help troubleshoot technical issues and ensure compatibility.
- Referrer URL records the page or site where a participant came from, useful for tracking recruitment sources.

💡 Pro tip: any account owner can head to account > data retention to modify these settings.
Some participants will have social data that might help you decide if they are a good fit for your research. We use an API from FullContact to provide some more information for participants that have publicly available information.
How fingerprinting works in Ethnio
This is a combination of browser-specific attributes including:
- Display resolution
- Color depth
- Fonts
- Timezone
- GeoLocation
There are many other items as well: up to 30 signals to create each fingerprint. We don't share them all so we don't give the bots too much to work with. This applies to all publishing methods (study links, web intercepts, and app intercepts).
