Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Ethnio includes the ability to send money all over the world along with storing personally identifiable information, so we take every measure to protect your account. You may enable 2FA from account >> profile >> security or be prompted to verify your account by adding a phone number so we can send you an SMS code.

This is a standard security measure you're probably familiar with from other secure web services. The phone number will never be used for anything else, and this is commonly known as Two-Factor Authentication or 2FA.

In the words of the Virgin America (RIP) safety video, for the .001% of you not familiar with 2FA, the concept is that we add an extra step to your basic log-in procedure. Without 2FA, you enter in your username and password, and then you're done. The password is your single factor of authentication. The second factor makes your account more secure, in theory 🙏🏼, hence the term two factor authentication. We also offer Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) by request using the Authy app, which is even more secure.

Unlike a PIN code for a debit card, a 2FA code is used only one time; each time you log into that account, you'll be sent a new unique one-time passcode. This adds an extra layer of security and make sure that people trying to gain access to your account are who they say they are.

2FA prevents a large portion of hackers from targeting your account as they'll need to access your phone too. This way many hackers will simply move on and find easier accounts to break into. Unfortunately SMS isn't all that secure, so that's why we also offer MFA via Authy by request.

If you lose your phone or change your number, feel free to contact help@ethn.io and we'll help you get access to your account.
