Customizing the study request page 📝

There’s one main form your study requesters have to complete to create a research study request. You can control all the content and inputs on this page.

Where to edit study request pages

For account owners and admins, head to Study Intake › Request forms and either edit an existing form or click New request form.. The Requester page is Step 2 of 4, right after Basics. This step sets what requesters see and how they start a research study request. The next two steps, AI & questions and Alerts, happen behind the scenes.

Add content button ➕

Click the + Add Content button to add text or questions that can be part of your study request. Currently:

  • Text block
  • Countries for incentives

Text blocks ✏️

The Content section holds the text requesters read at the top of the page. For now it supports text blocks only, and more form inputs are coming soon.

What you can do in a text block

  • Format text (bold, italic, underline)
  • Add images, links, bulleted lists, and numbered lists
  • Change the text style with the paragraph menu, for example H1 for a headline or P for body text
  • Align the text
  • Add an emoji
  • Insert a variable, like Company name, that fills in automatically when requesters open the form

Managing your blocks

  • Click Text block + to add another block.
  • Drag the handle on the left of a block to reorder it.
  • Click the trash icon to delete a block.
  • Click the arrow on the right of a block to collapse or expand it.

💡 Most forms need only one block with a headline and a short intro. Add a second block if you want to keep instructions separate from the welcome message.

Countries for incentives 💸

If you'd like to add a structured field that will automatically assign a single country for recipients to be paid in the new study, add this content. The only reason to add this question to your study request page is to ensure that your requesters select the right country for their recipients to be paid in.

This field overrides AI, so if someone selects Japan, but types in their request a different country, this will take precedence.

How requesters start a request 🚦

Below your text blocks, choose how requesters begin. You have two options.

✨ Describe or upload a study plan

Requesters describe their research study in their own words, or upload a study plan, screener, or other materials. Ethnio AI reads what they provide and drafts the study for you to review. This option is marked AI Assisted and is the recommended choice for most forms.

📋 Templates & past requests

Requesters are limited to selecting a study template or a previous study request. They can’t write a request from scratch or upload their own materials. This option is marked No AI Required.

For help deciding between them, see Choose How Requesters Start a Request.

Advanced settings ⚙️

At the bottom of the request page setup, you'll find advanced settings

Letting requesters pick a study type

Only do this if you want to restrict the study type for a form, like for an incentives-only request form. Most request forms don’t need this as the AI does a pretty good job of picking the study type.

When it’s Off (the default)

Requesters don’t see any study type choices. AI decides the study type from what they write.

When it’s On

Requesters choose a study type before they describe their request. You can edit the heading above the choices (the default is “How do you want to handle study type?”) and turn individual study types on or off.

Study type What it’s for
✨ Let AI decide Picks the best study type based on the requester’s prompt
🧑‍💬 1:1 Interviews Scheduled interviews with participants, typically moderated
📊 Survey Uses an external survey tool like Qualtrics, or Ethnio
👥 Focus Group Up to 10 participants per group, with up to 4 concurrent sessions
📓 Diary Study Uses an external tool like dScout, optionally with interviews scheduled in Ethnio
🎪 Event Workshops, panel discussions, and empathy challenges
🖱️ Unmoderated Exercise Card sorting and automated research tools, all done outside Ethnio
💲 Compensation Only Pay through Ethnio or track external payments
🧪 Beta Feature Testing Uses an external platform or tool, optionally with interviews scheduled in Ethnio

💡 Why use this? If your team only runs a couple study types.

For example, 1:1 interviews and surveys, turn on the picker and switch off the rest. Requesters see fewer choices and make fewer wrong picks.

Review the default headline and intro to get better requests 🎯

Whatever you write at the top of the page is the first thing requesters read. A few small choices make a big difference to the requests you receive.

  • Keep it short. One headline and a couple of sentences is plenty.
  • Say who the form is for. For example, “Use this form for any Research Ops request.”
  • Tell requesters what to include. The more detail they give about the audience, goals, and timing, the better the AI-drafted study will be.
  • Point to the right place for other needs. If a request doesn’t fit this form, tell people which team to contact.

Previewing and updating the page 👀

Click View form at the top right to see exactly what requesters will see. You can update the page any time, and changes apply the next time someone opens the link. Requests that were already submitted aren’t affected. When you’re happy with this step, click Continue to move on to AI & questions.
