Phone question formatting & validation ☎️

If you ask respondents for their phone number, you can have Ethnio automatically detect the country code and format their number properly in any screener (intercept or link):

Validation helps ensure accurate responses in your screener. There are three validation states:

  1. Invalid (Red): No entry or an incorrect input will turn red, preventing the respondent from proceeding.

  2. Partial Validation (Orange if not a required question): If you've enabled validation, but not made this a required question, we show an orange warning for malformed phone number according to each country (e.g., an invalid number) but does not block progress.

  3. Full Validation (Green): A valid entry is confirmed with a green checkmark and no highlighted color.

These indicators help guide respondents to provide accurate information while allowing flexibility when needed.

If they type a number with or without the + symbol, the automatic phone number validation will try to add the right country code. This works at about 95% accuracy, meaning some countries and networks might not be detected properly. Respondents can always use the dropdown to override the automatic location detection.

You can turn this option on from screeners >> questions >> phone >> options and then turn the Validation phone number toggle to on.
